A decade ago, Hollywood’s biggest stars would be making their movie premieres.
Now, they are doing their own.
As Hollywood’s star power has exploded in recent years, the industry has turned to more established stars and filmmakers for their first big movie premiere, such as Tom Cruise, Bradley Cooper, Mark Ruffalo, Ryan Gosling and Ben Affleck.
“There’s been a lot of reshoots,” says Matt Weiser, president of the American Film Institute, which represents Hollywood and is in charge of promoting the industry.
“But the fact that it’s still happening at the same time shows that people are willing to do it.”
With the advent of social media, celebrities have been able to show their fans what they have been working on, Weiser says.
“We know the power of social networks,” he says.
“It’s like you can send your movie out, but if you don’t know it, your fans don’t.”
Weiser says the same is true for movie premiexes, which are typically held at theaters that have become more accessible, such a movie theater in Manhattan.
He points to the recent launch of AMC in Los Angeles and the new Paramount Cinema in New York.
“They are opening up the movie experience,” Weiser adds.
“And the fans, they’re going to want to see it.”
Weimer says this is what Hollywood is doing now with the premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20.
The film is a superhero action movie set in Gotham, and its cast includes Ben Affellas, Jesse Eisenberg, Christian Bale, Jason Statham and Oscar Isaac.
It is based on the Batman comics, but is the first movie to be shot entirely in 3-D.
The release date has been pushed back to July 25.
Weiser hopes the movie will help boost attendance at movie premiexes.
“I think that if you are a fan of Batman, you’re going at this because it’s an exciting release,” Weimer says.
He hopes audiences will be “blown away” by the new movie.
Weiser expects the new release will be much bigger than its predecessor.
“The thing that makes this different is that the first one, ‘Dark Knight,’ was about Batman,” he notes.
“I think this is about the next Batman, which I think is really cool.”
Weyer says there are three main reasons why the new film will be bigger than “Dark Knight.”
First, it is set in New Gotham.
This means more people are able to see the film, and that means more fans will be able to attend.
Second, it will be more of a “family friendly” release, meaning parents and guardians can watch the film together.
And third, the movie stars Will Smith, Jessica Chastain and others.
Weimer notes the movie is based off the books and is written by Michael Gaydos.
“The Dark Night,” the new Batman film that was released in August, is based in part on the original “Dark Night” comic book.
We also saw the movie on the big screen in the summer when “The Conjuring 2” opened.
